Show Your Images / Re: Here goes...
« on: July 29, 2007, 01:38:43 PM »
I see why I do editorial work these days. I would hate to compete against work like this. I really like the second shot. It has  pure classic timeless feel to it. The top photo is great, I would make few minor tweaks. I would try to force the viewer more into the kiss. I crop a little more from the top, Burn in his forehead more, and burn in her shoulder. On the last shot I would it would have been nice to have seen more of the Mom (I am guessing) crying. I might crop out the mom because, I do not see enough of her. She is almost a distraction in the shot to me. This is great work. Keep up the most excellent work.

Say HELLO / Hey There
« on: July 28, 2007, 10:02:31 PM »
Hello everybody,
I am just a simple photographer from California. I have been really enjoying the show and picking up tips. I do shoot on the dark side through Nikon. I do mainly editorial, sports and a little commercial work. I mainly work with Mac. I use Photoshop and Bridge to edit my image.
I look forward to learning a lot from the people here, and expanding my skill sets.
So please be gentle with the critiques.
Thanks
Ralph

Show Your Images / After Hours
« on: July 28, 2007, 07:52:27 PM »
I had an editor to tell he needed a photo page for a Monday feature page which had to hit the press by 6am Monday. He said he did not care what it was. So I shot these images on a Friday and Saturday night. My them for the page was after hours. So I was hitting different bars, clubs and a cigar store. I work to 3am both nights. I even had to marry guys who were out on the town ask me not to have their images in the paper.

Business Stuff / Re: Go Pro or Not Go Pro...That is the question

Gavin brought up some good points. I would also mention salesmanship and customer service are just as important as photo skills. You can be the best photographer in the world, but if your customer service is bad, and that is what they remember. I would also recommend to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Have backup of cameras and flashes, and what ever it takes to complete the job.

No, problems. I have been doing this a while and this was a simple DWI.

These are just some minor tweaks I would do I really like number two the best. It has the best pose of the group. I like how the edges are burned to direct you to the subject. In one and three the model is to hunched over. Also the highlights need to be burned in. I would burn in the sidewalks a little more they tend, because they tend to pull the eyes away from the subject.
The girl is sort of lost in the background I would bring her closer to the camera. I would also burn in the building and sidewalk. These are some minor tweaks I would make I am far from an expert.

Gear, Media & Equipment. / Re: Nikon vs Canon vs Other
« on: July 27, 2007, 08:42:59 AM »
The newspaper chain I work with is Canon, so I had the opportunity to shoot the Canon Mark II with L lenses. But I own Nikon D2x with Nikon lenses. Heres the way I tend to look at the differences. Canon is more cutting edge in tech, but Nikon is a little more like a Tank in build and a little more conservative in tech.. Lens quality of optics and focus speed I do not see a great difference. Metering and flash system I tend to like my Nikon more. I do shoot a D2x so I am using a CMOS like Canon cameras so the color looks similar to me. I prefer the focus system with the thumb joystick for moving my focus zones. If the D2x had not come out I would be shooting Canon. In fact I own two Canon XL1s video cameras.
I would say the company to watch is Sony. They make most of the sensors we use now anyway. An unfortunately HD video is going to be the next big thing in still photography. I would say Sony has the lead there.

Show Your Images / DWI image

This is a shot I did about 12 am after I got a call about an auto wreck. It turned out to be a DWI. The driver driving his grandmother’s SUV leaves a bar and crash into a tree stump across the street. I shot this at f/2.8 @ 1/10 handheld, 1600 ISO with a Nikon D2x and a 80-200 f/2.8 VR.

This should be funny when I shoot Oakland, because my still gear is Nikon. So much for truth in advertising. Of course I do shoot a Canon XL1s video camera. My issue is it looks so tackey and Ugly color. I could live with silver and black. ;) ;)
