Lightroom
TracyAPhotography:
Gavin, I have listened to you go on and on about Lightroom and you have me very interested. The first I have heard about it was your show so I have a few quesions. Do you have to have a particular version of photoshop to use Lightroom? I am still using Photoshop CS. The presets you are creating and sharing with us - do they work only in Lightroom?
genemcc:
Hi Tracy!
Lightroom will work with any version of Photoshop and other image editors as well. As a matter of fact, you can set up your preferences so that you can open different image editors. Most of your global corrections can be handled all in LR without ever going into PS. You only need an image editor when you want to take the next step and do some pixel editing or use layers and masks.
The problem with LR and versions of PS before CS3 lies in camera raw. LR and Camera Raw are being kept in feature synch by Adobe. So, many of LR's adjustments will be unreadable by earlier versions of Camera Raw that accompanied earlier versions of PS.
Presets are for LR. Also, some of the presets are version specific so LR 1.0 presets might not work properly in LR 1.1
I'm sure Gavin will have more to fill in. Personally, LR has really changed my workflow. It's WELL WORTH the investment. Likewise, there is such a giant leap in feature from CS to CS3 you should upgrade.
TracyAPhotography:
Thanks Gene - great information! I am going to upgrade to CS3 soon - I am doing things in steps!! I am really concentrating on decreasing my work flow and it sounds like CS3 and Lightroom would be what I need.
genemcc:
They really do work wonderfully together! And LR is only in version 1.1 so I have very high hopes for what's down the road!
Gavin Seim:
Gene said it well. Lightroom is great for workflow. If you heard the last Roundtable DZ and I talked about how I use it for weddings.
Presets are great, and their fast. I have do many special effects with real time previews and unlike actions in PS they are all just settings that happen virtually instantly. Of course I still take some shots into PS before giving the pics to the client as you need a pixel based editor like PS to do things like glow effects.
For most of the images however LR works wonders, and it's very clean and simple. Once all the pictures are done just export them as jpegs and your all set.
The corrections type presets like I just posted today can make a huge difference. Obviously every image does not need a fancy color effect, but they do all need to be correctly exposed, and corrected. Workflow presets like these make that as easy as applying the preset to five hundred images and waling away. Of course theres always some fine tuning to get it all perfect but it gets you well on the way.
