RAW and Lightroom
(1/1)
Joseph Ferreira:
Greetings!
I have a question about Lightroom 3. I shoot my photos in RAW, I and will use the monochrome settings on my camera. I do not prefer to make changes in Lightroom or any other program if I have to, but if I import into Lightroom the program will automatically revert the RAW images back to Color. Is there a setting that I need to change to prevent this? I did create a preset that closely resembles the changes the camera can produce, but this is not the method I prefer. Your imput will be helpful.
Thank You,
Joseph

A raw file is just that in LR. RAW. I admit it's somewhat annoying, but really all that would be happening is LR would be applying default B&W settings. The camera is still not saving the RAW file in monochrome because a RAW file is all sensor information, which includes color.
It can still be useful to set the camera to monochrome, because it allows you to see through those Ansel colored glasses. Once you get to LR however you need to apply a conversion. You can use a basic B&W setting that you apply ion import. Though you'll probably want to do more after. I do a lot of B&W, and LR is like a darkroom when it come to getting a beautiful silver image.

Thanks. I thought I was going to lose my mind looking for that setting. The other thing I was doing was shooting in RAW and JPG at the same time, but I was not keeping that valuable data and the card would fill up faster. Thanks for your help!
